History of Bhutan

 

1. Ancient Origins

Bhutan of history is marked by ancient settlements and indigenous tribes. Archaeological findings suggest human habitation as early as 2000 BCE, with early communities practicing animistic traditions.

2. Introduction of Buddhism

Buddhism was introduced in the 7th century, significantly influencing Bhutan's spiritual and cultural development. Early temples built during this time laid the foundation for the country’s religious identity.

3. Guru Rinpoche’s Influence

In the 8th century, Guru Padmasambhava, known as Guru Rinpoche, visited Bhutan and established Vajrayana Buddhism. His teachings and spiritual influence remain central to Bhutanese culture.

4. Rise of the Drukpa Lineage

By the 13th century, the Drukpa Kagyu school of Buddhism became dominant in Bhutan. It played a major role in unifying various regions under a shared religious and cultural system.

5. Unification by Zhabdrung

In the 17th century, Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal unified Bhutan under a central government. He established a dual system of governance and built important dzongs (fortresses) across the country.

6. Establishment of the Monarchy

In 1907, Bhutan transitioned to a hereditary monarchy with Ugyen Wangchuck as its first king. The monarchy led Bhutan into a new era of unity, modernization, and stability.
